Michigan came into Memorial Stadium unbeaten, and was lucky to get out alive.

All-American Paul Giel, setting a new Big Ten record by handling the ball 53 times, passed for two touchdowns, ran for another, and didn't throw an incompletion until his twelfth attempt. He finished the day with 283 total yards, 88 more than the entire Michigan team. Why Giel decided to pass up the NFL for a baseball career remains one the the unsolved mysteries in Gopher gridiron history.
